The problem

 

Sometimes, people make plans and pay for a holiday or a flight, but then have to cancel for various reasons. This could incur cancellation fees and sometimes, if the cancellation is done last minute, full payment for a holiday not experienced. Even the bureaucracy and time involved in canceling these purchases can take plenty of valuable time.

There are three Israeli Facebook groups that serve as a platform for people to sell their vacations. The groups launched in 2014, and currently number over 90,000 users.

It appears that there is a huge potential customer base in Israel that can be approached with the right product. The groups are very active – approximately posts per month – which explains the amount of cancellations and/or searches for ‘second hand’ vacations.

Personas

 

The Facebook groups reveal two dominant personas:

  1. families who pre-purchased a vacation package and then have to cancel, for any reason.

  2. Spontaneous people looking for an attractive last minute deal.

A review of these products reveals:

  1. High reliability – money transfer is secure and mediated by the site/app managers.

  2. Roomer and TakeMyFlight boast a clean, uniform design.

The solution

I used a familiar template that the user would identify from other apps, in order to make it intuitive and convenient without making the user overthink.

Wireframes

Information architecture

Vacation deals will be displayed from closest date to farthest date, with an icon showing the days left until the vacation date. Once the date has arrived, the deal will be automatically removed from the app. Sold deals will be displayed as Sold – a marketing tool used to show dynamicity and activity.

Each deal can be expanded to reveal further information and the seller’s contact details.

Personalization via filters that include all the necessary information:
destination (autocomplete), vacation type, rating, what’s included in the deal, number of people, dates, cost and currency.

There will also be notifications for those who wish to clearly define their desired vacation type, dates, prices, etc.

I provide the necessary directions and information to get started. I used illustrations to make the process fun (like a vacation)

UI Design

 

I chose a simple, clean, two-color design that forms distinct contrast, helping users automatically differentiate between selling and purchasing a deal.

I used a familiar template that the user would identify from other apps, in order to make it intuitive and convenient without making the user overthink.
